Homemade French Onion Soup
- 3 large onions
- 1 tbs butter
- olive oil
- 1 tsp Worcestershire
- 3 14 1/2 oz. cans of beef broth
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of a dark beer (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups of mozzarella cheese (shredded)
- salt
- pepper
- 1 loaf of French bread
Preheat large Dutch oven on low heat. Melt butter in pot. Add olive oil, about 2 turns around the pot. Thinly slice all onions. Add onions to pot. Cook onions on medium heat until translucent, stirring frequently. Add Worcestershire. Stir onions again, making sure to mix in Worcestershire. Add salt & pepper to taste. Add beef broth, beer & water. Simmer for about 30 minutes.
Pre heat oven to broiler setting on low.
Slice bread into about about 1 1/2 inches in thickness. Place slices of bread into soup crocks. Make sure the crocks or bowls are oven proof. Add onions soup broth to crocks. Just pour over the bread. Make sure you get enough onions in the crock. Add shredded cheese on top of soup. Place crocks on jelly roll pan & place in oven until cheese melts & is lightly brown. Take out of oven & enjoy.
